Cath Anne: [00:01:33] Before we jump in I just wanted to give you a quick reminder to join me live on Instagram and Facebook live every Thursday at 7:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. So, definitely we highly encourage you to stop and take some jot notes along the way. Cath Anne: [00:02:07] This week we will add to our initial list with five more academic words. In this session we will be discussing the word, the part of speech, (whether its a noun, verb, or adjective) the meaning of the word. Then of course, as I mentioned we will put the word into a sentence so you can get a sense of the word in context. Cath Anne: [00:02:36] Lets begin. Cath Anne: [00:02:37] So the first word for this week is conclusion. Conclusion is a noun. It means the end or close. The word is important in academic writing, or if you are giving a presentation. You will frequently hear the phrase, In conclusion which tells people that this is the end. What was the final result? In conclusion, John won the award. John worked really hard at his studies, and in conclusion he won the award. So, in the end because of his hard work John won the award. Im going to write in conclusion down because that will be a helpful phrase for you to use both in your writing and in your presentations. Cath Anne: [00:03:50] The next word is conduct. It is a verb meaning to organize or to lead an activity. Make sure not to confuse this word with the noun conduct which refers to someones behavior. The stress in this word is on the second syllable: conduct, conduct. Cath Anne: [00:04:13] There are many different things that we can conduct. Some of the more common ones are: we can conduct research or we can conduct business. Cath Anne: [00:04:22] Maybe we can conduct a meeting. Used in a sentence, We can say Joe conducts the orchestra. In other words, he leads the orchestra. Joe conducts the orchestra. So, again conduct as opposed to conduct. Cath Anne: [00:04:49] The next word is consistent. Consistent is an adjective. It means acting or done in the same way over time; not moving away from principles or being contradictory. So, we could say, The mom was consistent in baking cookies for the children because the mom was consistent. Cath Anne: [00:05:22] The children came to expect the cookies. Yum yum. So the mom repeatedly made cookies and the children, therefore came to expect them. She was consistent. Cath Anne: [00:05:37] Number four is a word that I have mentioned pretty consistently throughout this session which is context. It is a noun. It means part of a statement that can either be written or spoken to surround a specific word or phrase. So, the best way to understand the meaning of the word is to put it in context. So, that is essentially what we are doing here we are putting these words in context. If you are if you understand what is being said at the beginning and what is being said at the end then you can probably guess what the word or phrase means. Cath Anne: [00:06:24] So, for example, Dark clouds covered the sky. It was a perilous journey and no one returned. Cath Anne: [00:06:32] If you dont know what the word perilous means because it is a bit complicated you can put it into context. So, in other words, look at the words surrounding the word: dark clouds, no one returned. These are bad things. This indicates that perilous means something bad or dangerous, maybe even life threatening. Cath Anne: [00:06:53] In other words in order to understand a word we can put it into context. Perilous means something bad or dangerous. Cath Anne: [00:07:07] Finally, we have the word coordination. Coordination is a noun. Cath Anne: [00:07:24] It is a combination of parts or people working together. We must have coordination if we are going to succeed. There was no coordination between the two teams and they were not successful in attaining their goal. If there is no coordination things do not work out well. So, in other words coordination means things that are working together simultaneously towards an end and often a successful goal. Cath Anne: [00:07:55] So that is it for this week. Cath Anne: [00:07:57] Those were your five academic words from the Academic Word List. I hope this session was of benefit for you and of course if any of these words stands out to you, please share a sentence in comments below. Tobacco And E Cigarettes Healthier Than Smoking Or...

Vaping and E-cigarettes: Healthier Than Smoking or Another Cancerous Path? The prevalence of these vaping and e-cigarette products has steadily risen across the globe in recent years and these products don’t seem like they will be departing anytime soon. The images and videos youth have been shown in school and commercials depicting cancer and emphysema victims at home have slowly started steering young one’s away from cigarettes. Though, there are large numbers of individuals who still smoke, whether due to already previous addiction without proper education on the health risks involved, young ones who attempt to fit in with their crowd, or just an individual trying to take the edge off. However, the opportunity to attain nicotine without†¦show more content†¦Overall, my breathing did improve after a few months, though my gums and mouth started to suffer. A number of the companies that produce the e-cigarettes do so for the reason of assisting in the quitting of tobacco products, more specifically cigarettes. In various cases, my own included, smoking and chewing drastically helps to reduce stress and take the edge off. Nicotine patches and gum prices are substantially larger than liquid for vaping, so it comes as no surprise the liquids are the obvious choice. Recently, certain states have started claiming that the products pose numerous health risks. VanOuse said in his article â€Å"in Indiana, a law was passed that any e-juice sold in the state must be approved through a security company as of July 1, 2016† (VanOuse, Indiana’s E-cigarette Regulations Disregard Smokers’ Health, 2016). Therefore, large numbers of the states have made it impossible for users to come in possession of any of these products at all. One element is for certain: the sales of nicotine patches and gum have dropped immensely due to the release of e-cigarettes and vaping liquid. So, while these pharmaceutical companies generate a substantial amount of money on expensive, ineffective smoking alternatives, the federal government generates just as much due to the tax laid on cigarettes themselves. If the problem is money, just tax the e-cigarettes a bit and be done with, don’t force people away from a healthier option. Now, we must take a look at what

Plato and Aristotle on Women Selected Quotes

Plato (~425–348 BCE) and Aristotle (384–322 BCE) are arguably the two most influential Greek philosophers in the development of western Eurasian civilizations, but among their differences was one that impacted the way women are treated even today.   Both believed that social roles should be assigned to each individuals nature, and both believed those natures were driven by an individuals psychosomatic makeup. They agreed on the roles of slaves, barbarians, children, and artisans, but not about women. Plato vs. Aristotle Based on his writings in the Republic and most of the Dialogues, Plato was seemingly open to the potential equality of men and women. Plato believed in metempsychosis (essentially reincarnation), that the human soul was sexless and could change genders from life to life. It was only logical that, since souls are immutable, they bring the same abilities with them from body to body. Accordingly, he said, women should have equal access to education and politics.   On the other hand, Aristotle, Platos student and colleague at the Academy in Athens, believed that women were fit only to be the subjects of male rule. Women have the deliberative part of the soul, he said, but it isnt sovereign in nature: they are born to be ruled by men in a constitutional sense, as a citizens rule other citizens. Human beings are the union of body and soul, he said, and nature has designed the female body for one job: procreation and nurturing.   Below are quotes in English from the Greek works of both philosophers. On the Relations of the Sexes Aristotle, Politics: [T]he male, unless constituted in some respect contrary to nature, is by nature more expert at leading than the female, and the elder and complete than the younger and incomplete. Aristotle, Politics: [T]he relation of male to female is by nature a relation of superior to inferior and ruler to ruled. Aristotle, Politics: The slave is wholly lacking the deliberative element; the female has it but it lacks authority; the child has it but it is incomplete. Plato, Republic: Women and men have the same nature in respect to the guardianship of the state, save insofar as the one is weaker and the other is stronger. Plato, Republic: A man and a woman who have a physicians mind (psyche) have the same nature.   Plato, Republic: If women are expected to do the same work as men, we must teach them the same things.†Ã‚   History of Animals vs. the Republic Aristotle, History of Animals, Book IX: Wherefore women are more compassionate and more readily made to weep, more jealous and querulous, fonder of railing, and more contentious. The female also is more subject to depression of spirits and despair than the male. She is also more shameless and false, more readily deceived, and more mindful of injury, more watchful, more idle, and on the whole less excitable than the male. On the contrary, the male is more ready to help, and, as it has been said, braver than the female; and even in malaria, if the sepia is struck with a trident, the male comes to help the female, but the female makes her escape if the male is struck. Plato, Republic, Book V (represented as a dialogue between Socrates and Glaucon): Socrates: Then, if women are to have the same duties as men, they must have the same nurture and education? Glaucon: Yes. Socrates: The education which was assigned to the men was music and gymnastics. Glaucon: Yes. Socrates: Then women must be taught music and gymnastic and also the art of war, which they must practice like the men? Glaucon: That is the inference, I suppose. Socrates: I should rather expect that several of our proposals, if they are carried out, being unusual, may appear ridiculous. Glaucon: No doubt of it. Socrates: Yes, and a ridiculous thing of all will be the sight of women naked in the gym, exercising with the men, especially when they are no longer young; they certainly will not be a vision of beauty, any more than the enthusiastic old men who in spite of wrinkles and ugliness continue to frequent the gymnasia. Glaucon: Yes, indeed: according to present notions the proposal would be thought ridiculous. Socrates: But then, I said, as we have determined to speak our minds, we must not fear the jests of the wits which will be directed against this sort of innovation; how they will talk of womens attainments both in music and gymnastic and above all about their wearing armor and riding upon horseback! Glaucon: Very true. Socrates: Yet having begun we must go forward to the rough places of the law; at the same time begging of these gentlemen for once in their life to be serious. Not long ago, as we shall remind them, the Hellenes were of the opinion, which is still generally received among the barbarians, that the sight of a naked man was ridiculous and improper; and when first the Cretans and then the Lacedaemonians introduced the custom, the wits of that day might equally have ridiculed the innovation. Glaucon: No doubt. Socrates: But when experience showed that to let all things be uncovered was far better than to cover them up, and the ludicrous effect to the outward eye vanished before the better principle which reason asserted, then the man was perceived to be a fool who directs the shafts of his ridicule at any other sight but that of folly and vice, or seriously inclines to weigh the beautiful by any other standard but that of the good. Glaucon: Very true. Socrates: First, then, whether the question is to be put in jest or in earnest, let us come to an understanding about the nature of woman: Is she capable of sharing either wholly or partially in the actions of men, or not at all? And is the art of war one of those arts in which she can or can not share? That will be the best way of commencing the inquiry, and will probably lead to the fairest conclusion. Essay on Manifest Destiny Essay Example For Students

Essay on Manifest Destiny Essay Essay on Manifest Destiny The term Manifest Destiny which was first used by journalist John OSullivan formed much of the foreign and domestic policy in the mid-nineteenth century. American politicians who were eager for the expansion of the U.S. as well as acquiring votes themselves were set on accumulating more land for America. Although the North, the South, and the West, all had different motives and different property in mind, they were unified in the quest for more land. In the 1840s the South was direly afraid of losing a balance in the Senate. They had already lost a balance in the House and feared that with the addition of any new states as free the North would permanently have the majority. They sought land in Caribbean islands namely Cuba to equalize the balance in the Senate. They went so far in fact, they almost began to invade Cuba without even informing the rest of the Country. The North on the contrary, had the upper hand and wanted to turn the remaining territories into free states. The West on the other hand wanted land for its own sake. This led to a domestic policy in which all three sections (North, South, West) fought for themselves, and the party in power did all they could in order to stay in power. The goal of Manifest Destiny at the moment was to acquire California. This was probably the most sought after piece of land in U.S. history and proved to be a unifying factor among Americans. Gaining California woul! d spread America from coast to coast, allow them to be a major force in the Pacific as well as Atlantic ocean, and permit them to trade with the beloved Orient more easily. The only thing that stood in their way was their neighboring country Mexico. In the mid-nineteenth century, the United States had no true allies. The majority of the powerful countries such as England, France, and Spain were angry at them for taking land from them. Britain obtained a paltry bit of revenge however by getting 5,000 miles of allegedly U.S. soil in northern Maine. Britain was also interested in an independent Texas, as that would prove to be a barrier in the U.S. expansion southward. This as well as many other factors caused America to formally invited to become the 28th state in the United States. It took nine long years however, before Texas officially became a state. Oregon on the other hand was a territory that could be acquired now. The British and the U.S. had strong claims to Oregon. Both could claim settlement and exploration. To avoid war, the to sides eventually decided to divide the expansive territory at the 49th parallel. This was how many of the trivial land arguments went during the 1840s. This was primaril! y because America was preoccupied with the whole Mexico situation and did not want war during a time where it was not economically advisable. Although this seemed to be a breach in the entire Manifest Destiny idea, America was only looking at the big picture which it rarely did. If they got into a skirmish with a country such as Britain, that would use valuable assets and resources that could be needed for combat with Mexico for beloved California. In 1845, the U.S. offered to buy Mexico and the land to the East for 25 million dollars. Mexico, who was irritated with the U.S. would not even listen to John Slidell, the American envoy. Polk was enraged and wanted to declare war on Mexico. Fatefully, on that night Mexican troops attacked General Taylors command and killed sixteen Americans. After a brief war which Polk may have provoked, the U. .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d , .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d .postImageUrl , .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d , .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d:hover , .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d:visited , .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d:active { border:0!important; } .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d:active , .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u90507c12c14929e6860d89f583ff281d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Things They Carried Persuasive EssayS. won and acquired California and Mexico.
